1. I had my students do a brainstorm in different colors. One of them read The Color Purple. At first I thought she was being very meta- about the assignment.

  2. kissmyneosoul:

Currently re-reading Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. The first time I read this novel was in High School for AP English, and merely to complete the quizzes and papers. Now, I read it for entertainment. Its very thought provoking, and his idea of the future is very in tune to whats happening today.
What are you reading??

Some of my kids are reading this as an independent choice, and it’s inspiration for me to read it too!

WOOF

I once walked behind a student, and she was just typing ‘fap’ over and over again. I totally thought it was a different word from far away, otherwise I might have been embarrassed to stop her.

  5. Also applicable to boyfriend drama and worrying about next year. And applicable to teachers and admin and counselors too. Stop messing with the sanctity of the last week!

  6. Maybe half of them are lying. My former roommate during 1st year of college told her teacher she wasn’t showing up because her Uncle had died so for proof she made a fake funeral pamphlet off Microsoft. The measures kids go through these days!

The thought definitely crossed my mind. The area where I work, though, many of these families legitimately have big issues coming up all the time. I’ll never forget the girl who’s dad died. She didn’t tell me about it. She just stopped coming to class. Her friends told me about her dad. The next year, I had her brother in my class.

Photoshopping a funeral program is pretty involved. Here, we call that bachi.*

Generally, I feel like a simple extension is a fine solution. I always follow up, “Hope your family’s alright” with “You’ve got to persevere.” Time is such a stupid constraint, anyway. I ku’e that.

    * That link isn’t the most accurate. Neither is this, especially as they reference Hawai’i. Maybe bachi originally means “what goes around comes around.” In my experience, it’s not just that. I mean, there’s an example where someone steals from a family and then the thief dies. Bachi has never seemed as cut and dry as that to me. The best example is when someone uses someone else’s crutches for fun. Someone else will inevitably yell, “Ay! You going get bachi!” or often just, “Aiya! Bachi!”

  7. Dear students,

STOP HAVING FAMILY EMERGENCIES DURING THE LAST WEEK OF SCHOOL!

    Love,
    Sean

PS - Seriously though, I hope your families are okay, and I wish they weren’t such a heavy burden for so many of you to bear.
