Even though it’s the eighth day out of the year, I decided to start a daily blog with an illustration for each day featuring an awesome person on their birthday.
Today is David Bowie’s 65th birthday, as well as…
Elvis Presley, Jenny Lewis, R. Kelly (his drawing’s in the closet), and everyone else who celebrates their birthday today!
Can’t wait to draw another tomorrow!
This is awesome! This is the first day of these drawings, but here’s hoping to a lot more!
As for me, I’m kind of running on fumes here.
TodayYesterday (January 8th) was the birthday of…well, you can tell from the above. This week, I’m going to run Bowie and Presley posts, alternating days if it works right. I’m going to label this Re: Creation, even though it won’t go quite as deep. Enjoy! I mean…rock your jailhouse, man!

Miranda July by Romina Shama on Flickr.
This is Miranda July. She’s the first person featured here by request. Thanks iferuniversity for suggesting her!
Here’s a bit of an introduction. July is an artist. What kind? Let me just say: there are books and pieces of art you wish you wrote. Miranda July does art like I wish I lived.
What does that mean? What kind of art does she create? July is a performing artist, writer, actor, and director. That’s pretty awesome in and of itself. We’ll be going into some of her projects this week. I really like that as a performing artist and a writer, she explores art in a variety of mediums. I don’t know about you, but in my mind I think a writer nowadays has to explore, and she does that. I love some of the online stuff she does. But let’s save that for tomorrow…
Oh, there’s a tumblr dedicated to her. That’s a little intimidating, but hopefully I can add a little to this community with my experience exploring her work.
Want to suggest a creative person for me to focus on? Leave a name in my ask box. Check the Miranda July tag on my blog for new posts this week. Thanks!

Lecture 9: The Sixties Generation reclaims patriotism with Jimi Hendrix’s deeply moving guitar version of “The Star Spangled Banner.”
This is not the first Jimi Hendrix song I ever heard. In fact, I think I heard Voodoo Chile first as a macho jock thing in high school. This was the a-ha moment, as we would call it in edu-speak. This is where I had the realization, “Oh. Hendrix is great because…”
I like that the people in the video are kind of like that too. At first, they’re just standing there. I’m watching, and I want to shout, “Don’t just stand there. This is an iconic performance!” By the end, though, they’re all excited. Most of them probably knew what they’d seen. At the one minute mark, it really hits.
If you haven’t seen this and you’re American, you NEED to watch it. Right now! If you’re not American, you should still watch it, but it might not quite say as much about your cultural identity as it does if you’re American.
Anyway, check out the Jimi Hendrix tag to see all the posts that follow for his stint as my Re: Creation focus of the week.
PS - We all know this song was originally a drinking song, right? Karaoke is good in that it gives us back the drinking song, but have we lost something as well?

» Re: Creation (Who's Your Favorite Creative Person?)
I felt kind of weird going into a week-long exploration of Jimi Hendrix. Let me back up a bit. I’m asking people/my awesome followers to leave suggestions of creative people in my ask box (or in reply to this). After receiving suggestions, I will then spend a week focusing on one creative person. Mostly, I’ve done authors so far, and they’ve all been simply at my whim. The idea for this is that I can be more interactive/proactive about the stuff I post here. If I take suggestions, I can learn about creative people I might not have otherwise explored.

I titled this CP of the Week a few days ago, but I’m re…branding it as Re: Creation. It feels a little less unwieldy.
Anyway, I got one suggestion (Miranda July, thanks iferuniversity!), but that’ll come next week…next year! The spheres were not quite ready. However, I wanted to open it up for more suggestions. I’ll continue to do that throughout the week, and really my ask box is always open. You can click the title, or you can click right here too!
Oh, and Jimi Hendrix? I was going to start with him yesterday, but it didn’t feel quite right. He’s not supposed to be some fallback plan. Then I saw the photo of him I’d queued for Christmas, and I thought, that’s not Jimi (I feel uneasy when people refer to *dead* artists by their first names, but I can’t help myself. It’s like that scene in White Men Can’t Jump, which we’ll get to eventually.), but of course it is too. Rock stars and celebrities are goofy and imperfect just like the everyday people we interact with regularly. We just like to think of them as the Platonic ideal.
Anyway. ANYWAY. Let’s start with the Star Spangled Banner…Oh, and leave me Re: Creation suggestions!
