Most of my posts yesterday and the next few days are about Dead Man’s Walk. A little Lonesome Dove, though. Gus and Call are convinced by one Jake Spoon to go to Montana. Here’s Montana. Originally, Lonesome Dove was supposed to be a feature film. Jimmy Stewart was supposed to play Gus (He’s the right height!), John Wayne was going to be Call, and Henry Fonda was slated for the Jake role. Wayne turned it down, which led to the others also declining.
That film might’ve been better than the eventual mini-series (Admittedly, I might just be saying that because I love Jimmy Stewart. The mini-series was quite good. Seven Emmy Awards good.), but it might’ve meant we’d never get the 1986 Pulitzer Prize winning novel form.
